Record 250 turnout for Ladies Day
Central Tennis Club, in partnership with Camisa, hosted a Ladies Tennis Fun Day in Olympia, Windhoek, drawing a record turnout of approximately 250 women on Saturday.
The event forms part of the Namibia Tennis Association’s (NTA) ongoing efforts to attract more women to the sport by creating an inclusive platform where participants can learn the game under the guidance of professional coaches.
Event organiser MaryBeth Gallagher said the initiative promotes women’s physical and emotional well-being, while also fostering camaraderie and building a strong tennis sisterhood.
“Central Tennis Club has given us full use of the premises so that we ladies can have a great time together and bond,” she said.
Gallagher noted that this year’s gathering marked the third edition of the event, which has continued to grow from strength to strength, with several participants from last year returning as volunteers.
“Each year, we have more entries. We hope to host something later this year, perhaps a Queen of the Courts tournament, to invite everyone back.
“Hopefully, most of them won’t need an invitation because they will already be members,” she said.
Come break a sweat
NTA vice president Vekondja Kuzee was also on hand to support participants. He described the initiative as a beautiful concept, especially as it coincided with Valentine’s Day.
Kuzee emphasised that investing in development events such as this is crucial not only for strengthening representation at all levels but also for increasing tennis participation and growing the sport’s membership base in the country.
“We really need to get more women in our society playing tennis. It would be good for them to come out, break a sweat and get active.
“They also get to interact with others, make new friends, learn a new sport and then see where that takes them,” he said.
