The table tennis national team’s preparations for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games included sessions at the High Performance Centre (HPC) to fortify the athletes’ physical readiness.National coach Simon Gologolo has declared the team fielded by the Namibia Table Tennis Association (NTTA) ready to compete, as they begin their campaign today.
The Games began on Thursday and will continue until 13 July, bringing together over 2 022 athletes and officials from nine participating countries, including hosts Namibia, competing in 12 sporting codes in Windhoek and Swakopmund.
South African national Gologolo, who holds an ITTF Level 2 coaching certification, is assisted by Wayne Green. Gologolo said the team has been committed to their training programme and he is hopeful for a strong tournament performance.
“Our training camp started in mid-May and I’ve been putting the players through four sessions a day alongside the seniors. Their quality has shown tremendous improvement,” he said.
He added that inclusion in the High Performance Centre has been a key element in the athletes’ preparedness for the games.
“Our manager, Karin Farmer, plays an integral role in our relationship with cricket at the HPC. I think we’re one of the first codes to join them. It’s an amazing programme and our stay has been awesome so far.
“It has really helped my players peak at the right time. It’s a crucial part of our preparation because it supports the physical side, which complements the diet handled by the parents and the skills I impart to the athletes. I’m really grateful for it.”
He further encouraged the public to come out and support the team, which will be in action from today until Friday at the Windhoek Showgrounds.
