Ghayouri, Gebauer impress at Gauteng North Open
Namibia’s rising table tennis talents Kamrouz Ghayouri and Lian Gebauer delivered standout performances at the Gauteng North Open, held from Friday to yesterday in Pretoria North, South Africa.
Ghayouri stormed to gold in the boys' U15 category, securing his first title on the international stage. He also impressed across higher divisions, reaching the quarterfinals in the U19 category and the round of 16 in the senior division.
The fourteen-year-old has carried strong form into the year, having claimed triple gold at home in the U19, U17 and U15 divisions at the Arysteq and Simonis Schools Tournament in Windhoek last month.
Competing alongside him, Gebauer also produced a solid showing, reaching the quarterfinals in both the girls' U19 and senior women’s divisions.
She comes into the event on the back of gold-medal performances in the girls' U19 category at the Arysteq and Simonis Schools Tournament.
Accompanying the team was Namibia Table Tennis Association (NTTA) vice president Taschiona !Gawaxab, who described the Gauteng North Open as a prestigious ranking tournament for South African players.
“They [Ghayouri and Gebauer] delivered exceptional performances and showed resilience in a tough field.
“Namibia’s presence was strongly recognised, and the results confirm that South Africa now faces serious competition from neighbouring countries,” she said.
