Grootfontein crush Dolphin in both matches

FNB Grootfontein Rugby Club beat FNB Dolphin Rugby Club in both the Premier League and Reserve League matches at Dolphin’s home ground in Swakopmund on Saturday.

The Reserve League match set the tone, with Grootfontein winning 41-17. The reserve league’s top four clubs Kudus (first), Unam, Wanderers and Grootfontein will remain unchanged in the build-up to the semi-finals.

In the premier league match, Grootfontein won 54-22. They led 35-17 at half-time and added to their total after the break, while Dolphin only managed one try in the second half.

Grootfontein were stronger in the forwards’ scrum and maul exchanges, and also performed better among the backs. Dolphins at time managed to capitalise on occasional Grootfontein handling errors, but could not close the gap.

For Grootfontein, currently fourth on the log, their captain and hooker Wikus Jacobs scored three of their eight tries, while centre Franklin Busch (6) and wing AJ Vercuil (one) landed conversions. More five-pointers by number 8 Pieter Daan Kok, lock Johan Luttig (two), prop Filippus Tshuuya and centre Niel Holtzhausen ensured that the northern visitors came away with the maximum six log points.

Dolphin scored three tries, which was one short of securing a bonus point, rounded off by lock Jerome Schumann, fly-half Maughan Jarman and centre Renardo Doeseb. Jarman (one conversion) and full-back Zaino van Wyk (one conversion, one penalty) completed their scoring on the day.


Red Bulls collect points

At Rehoboth, FNB Rehoboth scored eight tries against visiting FNB Western Suburbs to win 53-14.

Centre Miquel Busch and wing Daniel Bezuidenhout each scored two tries for the Red Bulls, along with one each by centre Elmarco Beukes, full-back Manfred Garoeb and replacements Deevan Mathys and Dolano Vries. Conversions by scrumhalf Jason farmer (4) and fly-half Denver Beukes (1) were successful.

The Khomasdal team’s efforts yielded one try each by nr 8 Nzola-Menza Nkunku and scrumhalf Adrian Engelbrecht, both converted by fly-half Wyatt Brooks.

• In the only match scheduled to be played in Windhoek on Saturday, FNB Reho Falcon withdrew from their away fixture against Montego United Rugby Club, when not enough of their first-team players turned up at Gemsbok Park in Olympia.

As a result, a 49-0 scoreline with the maximum six log points have been awarded to United, who remain second after the leaders FNB Wanderers.

Meanwhile six log points have been subtracted from Reho Falcon’s total. Reho Falcon also pulled out of their away fixture of the previous weekend against FNB Dolphin.

Due to injuries and other reasons, United head coach Herman Lintvelt had named match squads without the lively flanker and regular try-scorer Thehard Lintvelt, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season after a knee operation, loose-forwards Ben Burger and JD Nel, centre and regular captain DJ Holtzhausen as well as forwards Panduleni Ilonga, Leon Mutonga and Lionel Mutonga.
