Gaan Haal Hulle and Black Diamond NC were crowned football and netball champions respectively at the latest Old Mutual Street Sports Namibia monthly finals in Windhoek.

Gaan Haal Hulle claimed the football title, winning a trophy and the N$2,500 first prize. Matro United finished second, while Cyclone B secured third place.

In netball, Black Diamond NC took the title, followed by Brakwater NC in second place and Otjimuise Hotspurs NC in third.

Gaan Haal Hulle founder Yvonne Gontes was overcome with emotion after her team's victory, saying she had formed the team with players from her street to give them an opportunity to compete.

“I thought these guys are from my street. I said, let me try with my guys,” Gontes said, adding that she hoped to continue supporting the team in future editions.

Captain Ralphwin Hanse praised his teammates for their commitment throughout the competition.

“We finished the tournament on a high level, the same way we started it off. We started it with a high pace, same intensity, and that's how we finished at the end,” he said.

Hanse added that the team had to raise its intensity in the second half of the final after facing a strong challenge from their opponents.

The Old Mutual-backed Street Sports Namibia initiative features five-a-side football and Fast5 netball in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Ondangwa. Finals take place every fourth week, with the season running until 20 December.

Beyond competition, the programme aims to promote youth development, strengthen communities and encourage entrepreneurship through sport.
