Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) held their own as the MTC Volleyball National League (VNL) men’s division leaders after the third round wrapped up last weekend at Otjiwarongo’s C’est Si Bon Courts.

The reigning log leaders started their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Nampol before repeating the result against local side Mighty Gunners.

The much-anticipated clash against second-placed Namibian Defence Force (NDF) Raptors was halted with NCS leading 2-1 due to lighting difficulties at the courts.

A very happy coach

Despite frustration from NCS supporters, Raptors coach Andreas Lukolo welcomed the interruption, saying he was “a very happy coach.”

Reflecting on the weekend after their final match of the round, which saw them beat Nampol 3-0, Lukolo was all smiles.

“The weekend was in my favour because I won all my matches, first beating Keetmanshoop Correctional Facility 3-0 and repeating the same result with Nampol,” he said.

“We were also meant to face NCS, but we couldn't complete the game because it got dark, which worked to my advantage because they were leading 2-1. It was a nice weekend for me,” he added.

The same could not be said about NCS coach Anthony Likando, who felt the disruption affected what could have been a point-scoring opportunity for his team.

“The challenges in lighting are why I keep appealing to the public and sponsors to come on board and assist through venues and infrastructure for standard playing facilities,” he said.

The match has been rescheduled for the fourth round, set to take place on 19 July at the Windhoek Showgrounds.

Other men’s results

Other men’s fixtures saw University of Namibia (Unam) Hard Hitters edge Calvary Eagles 3-2, while Afrocat C enjoyed a winning streak, defeating Mighty Gunners 3-1, Calvary Eagles 3-2 and Keetmanshoop Correctional Facility 3-1.

Nampol’s only consolation came with a straight-sets victory over Unam Hard Hitters.

Revivals dethrone Queens

The women’s division also produced surprises, with Revivals dethroning early leaders Unam Queens after stunning them with a straight-sets win to overtake their narrow one-point lead.

Revivals continued their dominance by sweeping aside both Nampol and local side Nampol Otjozondjupa with 3-0 victories.

Despite bouncing back with 3-1 wins over Nampol Otjozondjupa and Six Stars, Unam Queens will have to wait until the next round to reclaim top spot.

Roller-coaster results

The rest of the women’s division delivered mixed results. Kudos secured straight-set victories over Ball Busters, while NDF Phoenixes were handed a 3-0 upset by Nampol. In the Nampol derby, Nampol edged Nampol Otjozondjupa in a tense 3-2 battle.

NDF Phoenixes finished their campaign with straight-set wins over both Ball Busters and Six Stars. Six Stars managed a consolation victory over Ball Busters.
