La Muela edges Maranatha in thrilling polo showcase
La Muela Polo Club secured a 5–4 victory over Team Maranatha in Namibia’s second polo exhibition match at La Muela Polo Estate on Saturday, with an exciting final chukka providing a fitting finish to the encounter.
The match brought together local and international players for an exhibition aimed at introducing more Namibians to polo, with the hosts holding on to their one-goal advantage despite a late push from Maranatha.
Both teams showcased their skills throughout the contest, with the final chukka producing some of the afternoon’s most entertaining action. The match also highlighted the spirit of sportsmanship between the sides.
One of the notable features was the participation of an eight-year-old player, the youngest on the field, who impressed with his communication and ability to contribute to La Muela’s performance.
La Muela Polo Club founder Till Jeske described the event as a success, emphasising that the exhibition was about enjoying the sport and introducing spectators to what the club has been developing.
“Today we had our second exhibition match. We showed what we are doing at the club and what we are playing,” Jeske said.
He acknowledged that the match was not played at an exceptionally high level, explaining that the occasion was primarily about enjoyment rather than intense competition.
“Our team, La Muela, winning is not extremely special because it is just for fun. We play for fun, and we were a little bit lucky today,” he said.
Despite the close contest, Jeske was pleased with the outcome and the overall response to the event.
“We had a lot of fun. We won by only one goal. It was a big success,” he added.
The exhibition marked another milestone for La Muela Polo Club, established by Jeske and his wife, Agnieszka Sambor, to introduce and develop the sport in Namibia.
The club features a full-size 5.5-hectare grass field, Argentine-style stables and 24 polo horses imported from Argentina. Its exhibition matches aim to grow public awareness while laying the groundwork for further development of the sport.
For CastleBet representative Tobias Naule, Saturday’s exhibition was also an introduction to a sport he had never watched in person. “It is my first time, very first time coming to a polo game. It is quite nice. It is an amazing feeling,” Naule said.
He praised the atmosphere, organisation and overall experience, describing polo as an interesting addition to Namibia’s sporting landscape. “I can just urge and encourage more people to come to the next one. I do not know when it is going to be, but please come and enjoy. It is polo. It is nice,” he said.
The second exhibition builds on the inaugural match held in April, when Team La Muela defeated Team Maranatha 8–6 in front of more than 500 spectators.
With another successful showcase completed, La Muela Polo Club continues its efforts to introduce polo to new audiences and establish the sport as part of Namibia’s growing sporting and lifestyle offering.
