Harmse duo double up at national champs
Cobus and Corné Harmse each claimed two titles at the Namibian Doubles Championships hosted by the Ice Stock Sport Association of Namibia (IAN) at the German Gymnastics and Sports Club (DTS) grounds in Windhoek last weekend.
The championships attracted 16 players, including four juniors, across the mixed, men’s and women’s doubles competitions.
Mixed honours
The mixed competition opened proceedings on Saturday, with six pairs contesting the title.
Cobus Harmse, the 2019 African champion, teamed up with his mother Corné, the 2013 African champion, to take the title with 10 match points and 47 stock points.
Max Feilmeier and Karin Curschmann finished second with eight match points, while Detlef Pfeifer and Loré Simpson took third with six.
The remaining pairs were Denzel Awoseb and Ladiwa Ouses, Jaydien Garoeb and Luiseneth Kahono, and Desmond vd Smit and Loraine Kruger.
Harmse, Feilmeier take men’s title
The men’s and women’s doubles competitions followed on Sunday, with the men’s event producing an early upset.
Top seeds Harmse and Feilmeier made a strong start before suffering an 8-5 defeat to Denzel Awoseb and 17-year-old Jaydien Garoeb in the second round.
The result opened up the title race, but Awoseb and Garoeb were unable to maintain their momentum, later losing to Ricardo Pieters and Johnny-Boy Hoëbeb, as well as Desmond vd Smit and Detlef Pfeifer.
Harmse and Feilmeier recovered to secure the men’s title with six match points and 25 stock points.
Pfeifer and vd Smit finished second with five match points, while Awoseb and Garoeb took third.
Joachim Herrle and Jasper Schrader finished fourth, ahead of Hoëbeb and Pieters.

The women’s competition went down to the tiebreak after all three pairs recorded one victory each.
Corné Harmse and Luiseneth Kahono took the title with a stock-point differential of plus five.
Loré Simpson and Loraine Kruger finished second on plus one, while Karin Curschmann and Ladiwa Ouses placed third on minus six.
