Cycling for a cause: Hollard Hearts road race
Road cycling
Windhoek will this Sunday welcome the inaugural Hollard Hearts Foundation road cycling race, an event set to inspire cyclists, families and the wider community alike. The event's organiser Anri Parker shared her enthusiasm ahead of the race: “It’s long overdue that there’s another spectacular road race on Namibia’s calendar. We’re excited to do it under the Hollard banner and to get the cycling community involved in giving back.”
The race offers three distances to cater to all levels of cyclists:100 km for elite riders,
60 km for seasoned cyclists,
30 km for fun riders, families and school teams.
Parker said the course is designed to showcase Windhoek’s new freeways, including the recently opened route to Finkenstein, which will see riders tackle a challenging hill climb.
“It will be the first race to actually use this new freeway. There’s lots of space to accommodate many riders safely. The route is perfect for a mix of competition and fun.”
Entries remain open until race day and participants can register online via the Hollard Hearts Race Day website. The website provides full details of the routes, water points and entry fees. Major sponsors, including Standard Bank and Sport Wrap, will support riders with water points and race-day assistance.
Hollard's national recoveries manager and director of the foundation Zelda Buitendag explained the vision behind the initiative: “Hollard has always been invested in the community, but we wanted something more structured and goal-oriented. The Hollard Hearts Foundation is designed to build a culture of giving, not just a one-off fundraiser.”
She elaborated on the foundation’s focus: “One of our main goals is to use the funds to renovate state-funded old-age homes. We want to make them safer and more accessible, with handrails in bathrooms and anti-slip surfaces, so the improvements have a lasting impact.”
She also highlighted the family and youth component: “Charity starts at home.
We want to teach children and families about recognising need and showing compassion. Even if you’re not cycling, you can come, enjoy the day and be part of something meaningful. No special talent is required – just an open heart.”
The event will start and finish at the MCG Cricket Grounds, offering vendors, food stalls and a play area for children. Whether you’re a competitive rider or a first-timer, the Hollard Hearts Foundation road race promises a day of sport, community and fun for all ages.
