The league champions, along with Oranjemund and Keetmanshoop, have qualified for the prestigious Bank Windhoek NVF Cup in October.
The recently concluded Southern Volleyball Association (SVA) League saw Bucht and Quiver dominate the season to be crowned champions of the women’s and men’s sections, respectively. The prize-giving ceremony was held last weekend at PK de Villiers Secondary School, with Keetmanshoop Mayor Annelise Knaus in attendance.
In the women’s section, competing against three other clubs, Bucht topped the standings on 13 points to claim the floating trophy and gold medals, along with a N$4 000 prize.
Bucht nearly lost their grip on the title in the final encounters of the season on Saturday, as they managed just one win from two matches.
They first beat Maltahöhe 3-1, but later lost 3-2 to Keetmanshoop, who had earlier swept Hoachanas 3-0.
Keetmanshoop’s back-to-back wins brought them within a single point of Bucht on the log, finishing second with 12 points and securing silver medals and N$2 000 in prize money.
Consolation victory
Maltahöhe’s consolation win came against Hoachanas, whom they defeated in straight sets (3-0) to secure third place on 11 points, bronze medals and N$1 000 in prize money.
Fourth-placed Hoachanas faced challenges in the season and were not able to muster any points.
The men’s section comprised six teams, with Quiver topping the table on 25 points to secure the floating trophy, gold medals and N$4 500 in prize money.
Oranjemund finished runners-up with 23 points to claim silver and N$2 500, while Keetmanshoop clinched bronze with 18 points and a N$1 500 prize.
The remaining log positions went to Maltahöhe in fourth place (10 points), Hoachanas in fifth (8) and Bucht in sixth (6).
‘Money will come’
SVA chairperson Santos Naholo congratulated the league winners on their outstanding performances throughout the season.
He also encouraged the top two teams from each section, who have qualified for the Bank Windhoek Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) Cup from 10 to 12 October in Windhoek, to begin preparations.
“Prepare your teams to travel and honour this commitment to play at this prestigious competition, where all other regions’ champions are competing,” he said.
“I acknowledge that the prize money remains discouraging, considering the expenditures for participating in the league. Until such a time that we get sponsors, we will do with what we have and ask that we don’t get discouraged. Money will come.”
He further expressed hope to see the teams return next season “more improved and committed to fair play to enhance the quality of the game.”
