ANOCA president announces N$9m football field for Namibia
Namibia is set to receive a FIFA standard football field valued at approximately N$9 million following a sponsorship announcement by the President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, ANOCA, and International Olympic Committee member, Mustapha Beraff.
The announcement was made during Beraff’s official visit to Namibia for the ANOCA Zone VI General Assembly that took place Windhoek.
The football field will be constructed at the Namibia National Olympic Committee’s OlympAfrica Centre in Omaruru and forms part of a continental partnership between ANOCA and FIFA aimed at improving football infrastructure across Africa.
The initiative focuses on developing football facilities at OlympAfrica Centres, with the goal of expanding access to sport for young people while strengthening grassroots sport development across the continent.
Through the partnership, FIFA provides technical expertise and support for the construction of football pitches that meet international standards. ANOCA works with National Olympic Committees to implement the projects within community based OlympAfrica Centres, which serve as hubs for sport participation, Olympic values education and youth development programmes.
Once completed, the new football field in Omaruru is expected to provide young Namibians with improved access to modern sporting infrastructure and opportunities to participate in organised sport within their communities.
The Namibia National Olympic Committee welcomed the announcement and described the sponsorship as an important investment in grassroots sport and youth development.
“The visit of the ANOCA President is of great value to Namibia and to the development of sport in our country. We are deeply honoured by Mr Beraff’s presence and grateful for the generous sponsorship that will directly benefit young athletes in Namibia,” the NNOC said.
The committee also expressed appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Namibia for granting Mr Beraff VIP status during his visit, highlighting the importance the country places on strengthening its relationship with the leadership of the African Olympic Movement.
During the official opening ceremony of the ANOCA Zone VI General assembly Beraff presented a commemorative trophy to the President of Namibia, Dr Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah, in recognition of the country’s commitment to sport development and its support of the Olympic Movement.
The trophy was received on behalf of the President by the Minister of Sport, who officially opened the General Assembly. In her address, Steenkamp welcomed delegates from across Southern Africa and highlighted the importance of cooperation between governments and National Olympic Committees in strengthening sport systems across the region.
She noted that sport plays an important role in inspiring young people, strengthening communities and contributing to national development.
Steenkamp also emphasised the need for strong partnerships, investment in sport development and support for athletes as Africa prepares for future global competitions, including the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
The ANOCA Zone VI General Assembly has brought together sports leaders from across Southern Africa to discuss the development and future of sport in the region.
