Reyneke takes victory in photo-finish thriller
Namibian rising star Kobus Reyneke delivered a standout performance at Round 4 of the Toyota Gazoo Racing SA Cup during the National Extreme Festival at Aldo Scribante Raceway, claiming overall victory on combined results after a dramatic weekend of racing.
Competing in the GR86 class, Reyneke set the benchmark early by storming to pole position with a record-breaking qualifying lap of 1:11.608. The time shattered the previous GR86 lap record by 0.4 seconds, immediately marking him as the driver to beat.
In Race 1, Reyneke converted his front-row start into a hard-fought win after an intense battle with rival Connor Weston. The leading pair quickly broke away from the field by more than eight seconds, engaging in a high-speed duel that showcased their pace and race craft, with Reyneke ultimately crossing the line in first place.
Race 2 produced one of the most thrilling finishes of the season. Starting from second on the grid, Reyneke shadowed Weston throughout, applying constant pressure in the closing stages. On the final lap, he attempted a bold inside move into the last corner, setting up a side-by-side sprint to the finish. Weston edged the win by just 0.019 seconds in a photo-finish that had the crowd on its feet.
Despite narrowly missing out in the second race, Reyneke’s consistency across both heats secured him overall victory for the round.
The 16-year-old Namibian driver, who has successfully transitioned from karting dominance to the national GR86 championship, continues to impress with his speed, maturity and race intelligence. His latest result adds to a strong 2026 campaign featuring multiple wins, podium finishes and a new lap record.
Reyneke extended gratitude to Leeroy Poulter, the Toyota Gazoo Racing team, his mechanics, family and sponsors for their continued support and preparation throughout the season.
The next round of the Toyota Gazoo Racing SA Cup will take place on 15 August at the East London Grand Prix Circuit.
