Ongos Ladies Football Club (FC) coach Shama Gure has warned his team about complacency as they prepare for the 2026 FNB Women’s Super League season.

The team, once known for its ruthless mentality in the women’s league, was piped at the post by Beauties FC in last season’s campaign.

Ongos had previously dominated the women’s game, winning five consecutive titles before Beauties FC won the league by two points ahead of the former champions.

The club played the season without a defeat, but a series of draws proved costly, which gave an advantage to Beauties FC.

Gure has, however, vowed to orchestrate a different approach in a bid to reclaim the title.

“I think our style of play did not fail us last season, but it was more about the complacency of the players during the season.

“It is worth noting that losing the title last season might have been a blessing in disguise because it served as a wake-up call for the team.

“We did not play badly last season because we did not lose a match, but the draws were too much in one season,” Gure said.

The football club commenced with training on Monday as they prepare for the season, which kicks off next weekend.

Gure confirmed that most players had returned, but expressed concerns about the pace at which some players have been attending training.

The coach is running against time in order to make sure that his team is ready for the season.

“Well, it has not been as rosy as it should be at the start of the training because players are coming back rusty and on their own time.

“I am, however, doing everything possible to make sure that everyone is ready and has a different attitude towards the season.

“Our approach this season will be much more conservative as we attempt to reclaim our title,” he said.

Last season

Beauties FC were crowned champions of the 2024/25 season with an impressive unbeaten record in 22 matches, collecting 58 log points during that period.

The team’s remarkable unbeaten streak saw them win N$250 000 in the process.

Ongos Ladies FC finished in second place, earning N$150 000, while African Stars Ladies walked away with N$100 000 for their efforts.

Ongos Ladies FC’s goal machine, Memory Ngonda, won both Player of the Season and Top Scorer of the Season after netting 39 goals.

Sponsorship blessing

The women’s league faced a period of uncertainty towards the end of the year before FNB Namibia recommitted to sponsoring the league.

The bank announced a sponsorship of N$9.3 million towards the Women’s Super League for a period of three years.

The money will be divided into three seasons of Women’s Super League football.
