Old Mutual Street Sports crowns Takaza FC and Ombuka 1 champions
SWAKOPMUND – Takaza FC claimed the soccer title, while Ombuka 1 emerged victorious in netball at the Old Mutual Street Sports Namibia Second Edition Finals held at the DRC informal settlement in Swakopmund on Sunday.
In netball, Ombuka 1 defeated Bombsquad 11–8 in the final to secure the championship. The teams were level at 5–5 at half-time before Ombuka 1 pulled ahead to seal the victory.
Sherwie’s Dynamite and Ombuka 2 met in the third-place play-off, with Sherwie’s Dynamite claiming third place.
On the soccer field, Takaza FC defeated The Selection FC to lift the title. After a goalless opening period, Takaza broke the deadlock and held on to its advantage to secure the win.
Both finalists had progressed through their preceding fixtures, with Takaza FC defeating Tura FC and The Selection FC also recording a victory. Kolombia FC faced Ombuka FC in the third-place play-off, with Kolombia claiming third place.
Speaking after the finals, Street Sports Namibia representative Etienne Raymond said the second edition had recorded significant growth in team participation.
“We were very excited about this edition. We grew from six teams to 16 teams, and we hope for this to continue to the third edition,” Raymond said.
He encouraged interested players to register for the next edition through the Street Sports Namibia website, noting that the standard of football was improving and matches were becoming increasingly competitive. “The quality is improving. It’s very competitive. The margins are small,” he said, also highlighting the support from spectators who turn out to watch their neighbourhood teams.
Raymond said the initiative aims to create a community event that extends beyond sport by encouraging local vendors to participate and opening up opportunities for entrepreneurship.
The second edition also saw the introduction of the Be Your Own Boss programme, which provides players and coaches with weekly sessions focused on developing entrepreneurial skills.
According to Raymond, all participating players receive free access to the programme, which aims to help them identify business opportunities, create employment for themselves and develop sustainable sources of income.
“In partnership with Old Mutual, you play sport and develop that talent, but also develop your entrepreneurial ability. It’s about creating your own job, creating your own income, creating your own livelihood as God designed it for you. Let’s make the third edition bigger and better! Come join us,” Raymond said.
