De Witt reaches 18th green to win WBM Flags

Jakkie de Witt reached the 18th green before exhausting his allotted strokes to win the WBM Flags competition at Walvis Bay Golf Club last weekend.

De Witt advanced further around the course than the other 37 players in a format that combined medal stroke play with the golfers’ adjusted handicaps.

In a Flags competition, each golfer receives a fixed number of strokes based on the course par and their playing handicap.

Once a player has used their full allowance, they plant their flag where their final stroke finishes, and the golfer who progresses furthest around the course is declared the winner.

For this edition, each participant played off six strokes fewer than their normal handicap, reducing the number of strokes available to them.

Pieter “Shackleton” Thompson was the first player to exhaust his allowance, planting his flag near the 14th tee. De Witt continued as far as the 18th green to secure the overall honours.


Other top honours

Schalk van Wyk finished second, followed by Willie Venter Jr in third and Andre Burger in fourth.

Eugene Slippers, Wynand Möller and Thomas Wolff completed the prize positions from fifth to seventh, respectively.

Jonas Niilenge claimed the two-club prize after recording the only two of the competition, completing one hole in two strokes.

Event organiser Shane Westerdale said the tournament once again formed part of the club’s established annual programme.

“At prize-giving, [WBM representative] Kurt Brits confirmed that WBM would return as sponsor for next year’s competition, which is always something golfers like to hear,” Westerdale said.


Better Ball next

Walvis Bay Golf Club will next host the Namibia Ship Chandlers Better Ball competition, which will be played using an 85% handicap allowance this weekend.

In the Better Ball format, both members of a pair play their own ball, with the better nett score between them counting as the team’s result on each hole.

The tournament will also offer two individual prizes for players who perform well but do not finish among the Better Ball prize winners.


Seniors results

Koos Jacobs won the latest Thursday Seniors competition with 40 Stableford points. Willie van Wyk finished second on 34 points, while Boel Grobbelaar took third place with the same total. Bossie Bossman claimed the competition’s “loaf” prize.


Club programme

Westerdale reminded players entered in the DMSS Match Play competition to arrange and complete their outstanding matches.

Club membership subscriptions are also due. Members who have not paid will be required to pay visitor fees, while the updated membership list will be used for the members’ draw.

The club’s annual general meeting is scheduled for 19 August, at 18:30. The nomination list for committee positions will be placed on the notice board.

The Joker draw remains unclaimed after Johnny G drew the eight of clubs last week. The unsuccessful draw left N$34 000 in the pool, which will increase to N$35 000 this Friday.

The club will also stage its Fanatical Friday team competition on 21 August. Entry will cost N$600 per team, with N$500 going into the prize pool and N$100 allocated to the club.

The winning team will receive 50% of the final prize pool.
