Zambia dishes out 8-0 drubbing to Angola
Football
There were goals galore in the AUSC Region 5 women’s under-20 football competition in Windhoek yesterday. South Africa took the lead in their 3-0 victory over Eswatini as Busisiwe Mokoena turned the ball home from close range after Lindelwa Mabuza’s free kick was only parried by the goalkeeper.
Mabuza then doubled the advantage when her shot from just outside the box nestled in the back of the net. And it was 3-0 just before halftime when Zizipho Mhlahlo was sent through on goal with a superb pass and she provided a cool finish.
Zambia claimed an emphatic 8-0 victory over Angola in the other Group B game on the day, scoring six of those in the first half.
Victoria Mbali, Bwalya Chileshe and Saliya Mwanza all scored two goals each, while there were further strikes from Zangose Zulu and Eunice Bwalya.
The victory takes Zambia into the semifinals as they ensured they cannot finish outside the top two in the pool.
Group A in the women’s competition will conclude on Tuesday when the final round of matches are played.
Botswana sit on top of the pool with six points from their two games and have already secured qualification to the semifinals. They take on hosts Namibia at 12h00 CAT (10h00 GMT) at the Hage Geingob Stadium, where a point will be enough for them to seal top spot, and for Namibia to advance in second place.
If Namibia win then they will take top spot in the pool with Botswana in second place.
At the same time, Malawi take on already eliminated Zimbabwe at the UNAM Stadium.
Malawi must hope for a Namibia defeat and then to beat Zimbabwe to sneak into second place.
