Valentine’s Open tournament set for Walvis Bay
Local football organiser Jackson Kahambundu has planned the Valentine’s Open, which will take place on 28 February at the coastal town. The tournament will feature local teams from the region competing against each other, with teams from outside Erongo also invited to participate.
Kahambundu said the competition will give players and teams a platform to showcase their talent.
“Hosting tournaments of this nature is important as it creates a stage for players and aspiring talent. These tournaments play a vital role in player development, and some participants may even get scouted by bigger clubs,” he said.
He added that the event also provides football entertainment for fans beyond the Namibia Premier League.
The Valentine’s Open carries a total prize pool of N$25 000. The winners will take home N$12 000, while the runners-up will receive N$7 000 and third place N$3 000. Individual awards will also be presented, including Player of the Tournament, Best Defender, Best Goalkeeper and Top Goal Scorer, with prize details to be announced later.
Kahambundu said the tournament will also be a competitive platform for teams to claim local bragging rights.
“Competitiveness is high because teams want to show who’s boss locally. The tournament also helps keep the youth engaged with activities off the streets. Vendors will have the opportunity to sell their products, with stalls priced at N$350,” he said.
The registration fee per team is N$1 700, and the tournament draw is set for 27 February.
“The teams can contact me [Kahambundu] at 081 778 8561 or 085 784 2793 for more information. We are looking forward to exciting matches and additional awards for standout performances throughout the tournament,” added Kahambundu.
