Street Sport host local Sunday clashes
Old Mutual Street Sports Namibia hosted an action-packed weekend of five-a-side football and Fast Five netball on Sunday.
It brought high-stakes competition and vibrant energy to the heart of the Katutura community.
The tournament featured a series of fast-paced matches, with spectators gathering around the courts to cheer on their favourite neighbourhood teams and soak up the lively atmosphere.
Among the day’s standout highlights on the pitch, Cyclone A delivered a dominant performance in Group Three, overwhelming Kakchucks with a convincing 6-2 victory.
Damara 7 secured an exciting 5-1 win over Damara 15 in their Group One clash, while Gaan Haal Hulle earned a solid 2-0 victory against NASOK.
Cyclone B edged out Tsau tago in a five-goal thriller, finishing 3-2. The tensest encounter of the day saw Matro United and Kasii Boys battle out a hard-fought 3-3 draw in Group Two.
The matchday roster also saw several default wins recorded due to forfeits, with Matro United, Kasii Boys, Cyclone A, Kakchucks, Cyclone B and Tsau tago each awarded 3-0 victories over their respective non-appearing opponents.
Organised as part of an ongoing effort to promote community engagement and youth sport, Old Mutual Street Sports Namibia’s five-a-side football and Fast Five netball tournaments have quickly established themselves as regular fixtures on Sundays across local neighbourhoods, in Swakopmund and Oshakati as well, offering local athletes a platform to showcase their talent while uniting sports lovers of all ages.
A player of Kakchuckz, Kaya Appolus, expressed how grateful he is to be part of the initiative.
“So far it's been a great experience to be part of this programme…we need more initiatives like this,” Apolu said
“The momentum has picked up. Street sports not only brought players together and the community together, but it brought the whole of Katutura together,” he said.
