NPFL title chase still on
African Stars and Eeshoke Chula Chula are currently the two teams appearing to break away from the rest of the chasing pack at the top of the league following last weekend’s results.
Stars ended the weekend at the summit after collecting six points against Mighty Gunners and Life Fighters. Chula Chula, however, is breathing down their neck, having collected four points on the coast this weekend. The two leading teams sit on 41 points, seven clear of Mighty Gunners, who are third at the moment. They are also eight points ahead of fourth-placed Ongos Football Club (FC).
Stars and Chula Chula have played one more game than Gunners, who have only played 19 matches so far. As things stand, it appears to be turning into a two-horse race, while Gunners will be hoping closely for a chance to overtake Stars and Chula Chula in the upcoming fixtures. African Stars coach Agnus Elemu said the club is not focused on what is happening around them but remains committed to delivering results.
Stars beat Mighty Gunners 1-0 on Friday evening before thrashing Life Fighters 3-0 on Sunday.
“I can say that we are happy with the weekend’s results because we managed to collect six points,” Elemu told Sport Wrap yesterday.
“The fact that the pressure is mounting makes it crucial to get maximum points on the board.
“I must say that the players remain focused on what the team is doing and not on what other teams are doing,” he added.
Chula Chula, on the other hand, played to a 1-1 draw against Eleven Arrows on Saturday before defeating Blue Waters 2-0 on Sunday in Walvis Bay.
The results meant the northern side remained undefeated for three consecutive weekends and continued its pursuit of the defending champions.
Chula Chula head coach John Sikerete remained grounded and focused on the next league match.
“I think going to Walvis Bay and getting four points was an achievement for us this past weekend.
“The team travelled a long distance from the north and still managed to outpace a team playing at home.
“Yes, we are aware that the team is in a good position, but I will not let the players or myself get complacent because there are still so many matches to go,” he said.
Bottom hot
The bottom of the premier league table is heating up, with only six points separating the last-placed team from the side in 10th place.
Blue Waters, currently in 10th, have 21 points, followed by Julinho Athletics and Rundu Chiefs on 20 points each.
Last season’s runners-up, Young African FC, have dropped to 13th position with 19 points.
Okahandja United are now in the relegation zone, placed 14th with 19 points.
Tigers, with 16 points, and Life Fighters, with 14 points, are the bottom two teams facing the danger of relegation.
