Namibia Football Association (NFA) league director Mabos Vries has sung the praises of football clubs that participated in the 2024/2025 season.

Vries said there have been many things that stood out, but most of all, he appreciated the commitment of the clubs.

“We achieved a lot this season and we have learned a few things compared to last season.

“I have to say what has been outstanding for me was the commitment and cooperation from the clubs.

“The fact is that we started very late last season, but we ended the season on time thanks to the cooperation by the clubs,” he said.

He pointed out that several happenings, such as the passing of founding president Sam Nujoma, the international match program, as well as the MTC Maris Cup, were among the factors that interrupted the league match schedule.

At some points, matches also had to be postponed due to the unavailability of football venues.

“There were other times when matches were called off due to bad weather conditions.

“I can, however, sum up that it was a very competitive season all round, with the Debmarine Premiership champions only determined in the second-last round of matches of the season.”

Next season

The league director confirmed that plans for the next season are already underway.

There has been speculation that the league might not start in time due to the soured relations between the football association and its main sponsors.

It was also alleged that several clubs in the top-flight league demand that the league handle its own affairs by becoming an autonomous league.

Vries, however, shied away from commenting on such matters, as it was not in his jurisdiction.

“I can say so far we already have plans aligned for the next season and that will be announced in due course.

“We expect to make announcements on some pre-season tournaments that will be held before the 2024/2025 season kicks off,” Vries noted.

He confirmed that the association is in the process of cementing sponsorships for the leagues, as well as additional funding.
