FNB Women’s Super League produces shockers
The FNB Women’s Super League produced shocking results at the weekend, with some big teams failing to impress on the opening day.
There were impressive displays from the newcomers, who managed to make their mark on the day.
Former league champions Ongos Ladies FC were dealt a huge blow in their opening match after playing to a 3–3 draw against Julinho Athletics Ladies.
The result came as a shock and disappointment for Ongos Ladies coach Shama Gure, who had expected his side to go all guns blazing in their opening match.
“Well, one can say that the result was very disappointing for all of us as a team because we wanted to win our first match of the season.
“As a coach, it is up to me to quickly assess the situation and rectify it going into the next fixture, given that we do not want a repeat of last season.
“It is good scoring goals, but it is also not good conceding them because it puts us under pressure,” Gure said.
The league commenced without champions Beauties FC in action, but last season’s third-placed finishers African Stars Queens were involved.
The team will be ruing a missed opportunity to start the season with a bang following a 1–0 defeat to Mighty Angels.
The team’s staff said they hope to bounce back after the loss to Angels.
“It was not a great result for us, but we hope that we can bounce back from this and make sure we win the next match,” the club said.
VPower Angels, on the other hand, started the season with an impressive 4–0 victory over NUST Babies FC.
The NUST team continues to struggle in women’s football going into the new season, having been on the receiving end of many goals last season.
Khomas Nampol FC also signalled their intentions early in the season following their 3–0 win over Desert Foxes FC at the weekend.
Mighty Gunners Ladies made a strong introduction to the league with a 3–0 win over Windhoek City FC.
The Gunners will be hoping that their first victory in the league sets a precedent for the team to perform well and challenge the bigger clubs.
In another match at the weekend, UNAM Bokkies FC played to a 1–1 draw in their opening encounter.
The FNB Women’s Super League is currently sponsored by FNB Namibia, which has recommitted N$9,3 million towards the league for the next three years.
The funds will be divided across three seasons.
Last season
Beauties FC were crowned champions of the 2024/25 season with an impressive unbeaten record in 22 matches, collecting 58 log points during that period.
The team’s remarkable unbeaten streak saw them win N$250 000 in the process.
Ongos Ladies FC finished in second place, earning N$150 000, while African Stars Ladies walked away with N$100 000 for their third-place efforts.
Ongos Ladies FC’s goal machine, Memory Ngonda, won both Player of the Season and Top Scorer of the Season after netting 39 goals.
