Just four matches into the new Namibia Premier Football League (NPFL) season, ten of the 16 teams have now suffered at least one defeat, underscoring the competitiveness of the campaign. The weekend’s fixtures saw the defending champions African Stars FC fall 2-1 to Mighty Gunners in Otjiwarongo.
Mbakondja Tjahikika scored the 1-1 equalising goal for African Stars before Mighty Gunners found the winner to the top of the table at the end of Saturday’s round, edging out previous log leader KK Palace on goal difference.
KK Palace themselves secured a 1-0 victory over Blue Waters in Oshakati, with captain Kanza Beny Mfutila netting the winner.
Blue Waters, meanwhile, remain without a win after four matches.
In Grootfontein, Bucks Buccaneers drew 0-0 with newly promoted Rundu Chiefs. Speaking after the match, Bucks Buccaneers head coach Ronnie Kanalelo said: “We moved the ball well, particularly in the first half, and created chances behind their defensive line.
“However, our final decision-making and quality in the attacking third must improve. Possession must be played with purpose.”
Other notable results included Khomas Nampol’s 2-0 win over Life Fighters in Otjiwarongo, with goals from Nguzu Salazar and Ronaldo Vries, and Eeshoke Chula Chula’s 2-0 victory over Eleven Arrows in Oshakati.
Michael “Bwebwe” Jonas scored his third goal in four matches for Chula Chula, continuing his impressive start to the season. The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has been highlighted as one of the league’s most exciting young talents.
Julinho Athletic suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Okahandja United in Grootfontein, with the only goal coming from an own goal.
Julinho assistant coach Williams Chilufia reflected on the setback, saying, “We are very low in the standings. We worked hard this week and believed we could collect maximum points. We will go back to the drawing board to see what is best for us.”
The midweek results included a 0-0 draw between Unam FC and Tigers FC at the Independence Stadium on Friday afternoon, as well as a 1-1 stalemate between Young African and Ongos FC on Wednesday, with Nicodemus Haikali scoring from the penalty spot and Lyema Dopolo’s own goal leveling the result.
With the season still in its early stages, the NPFL continues to deliver intense competition and standout performances, including the rise of prospects such as Michael Bwebwe.
Clubs were still looking to consolidate more points in yesterday’s later rounds (before our time of going to print) as the race for the top spots heats up.
