African Genesis Archery (AGA) Namibia’s third shoot of the season saw new names come to the fore, with Ashton Ntsamba and Jorine Krugel claiming overall titles in the senior section.

The third event in the season’s series was held at Danie Joubert Combined School in Mariental, with archers from clubs and schools nationwide putting their marksmanship to the test in both senior and junior categories.

Archers competed in the Bullseye and Animal Target rounds, with a combined maximum score of 1 200 points at stake for medals.

Competing in the senior boys’ section, a new champion was crowned in Ntsamba of Community Hope School, who tallied an impressive 1 156 to clinch the gold medal.

Ntsamba finished ahead of Ru-Wayne Bezuidenhout of Windhoek Afrikaans Private School (Wap), who secured silver with 1 149, and schoolmate, reigning champion and two-time winner this season Willem van der Merwe, who settled for bronze just two points back on 1 147.

New schools league

At the previous ranking shoot held at Windhoek High School (WHS) in the capital a week earlier, AGA Namibia’s newly elected management introduced a new league system.

The league will see AGA’s 16 schools ranked against one another to determine event standings and the overall log leaders.

Organisers confirmed the initiative aims to increase competitiveness, with each school’s top four archers contributing to a combined team score at each tournament.

The Danie Joubert ranking shoot was dominated by Wap, Community Hope and Roots Gymnasium in the senior section, while Wap, Community Hope and Danie Joubert topped the junior standings.

Overall league standings see Community Hope leading both the senior and junior divisions, with WHS and Wap occupying second and third in the seniors. In the juniors, WHS and Wap are ranked second and third, respectively.

High standards

AGA Namibia’s newly appointed chairperson Madelyn Kruger praised the archers for competing under what she described as “very hot conditions”, noting the high standard of performance and reduced errors on the line.

“[We have witnessed extremely close scores,] which clearly shows that [we] are growing into more than just a ranking shoot. The event is becoming a real battle for the podium, where dedication and hard work make the difference,” she said.

Event organiser Anja von Watzdorf said the shoot was a resounding success, upholding AGA Namibia’s high standards while delivering a day of fierce competition and enjoyment.
