The Kavango West Chess Association hosted its first-ever Bank Windhoek Schools Individual Chess Championships last weekend.

The event marked an important step in broadening competitive opportunities for learners in the region, with top players set to represent Kavango West at the National Schools Individual Chess Championships in Swakopmund on 26 March.

Held at Kandjimi Murangi Secondary School, the inaugural event drew 17 players from two schools, Kandjimi Murangi and Himarwa Lithete Secondary School, competing across the U15 to U21 sections.

The top players in the U15 to U19 categories will represent the region at the national championships.

In the U19 Open category, Petrus Kambaraha of Kandjimi Murangi Secondary School was crowned champion, finishing ahead of schoolmate Simon Muronga, while Klaus Dinyando of Himarwa Lithete Secondary School secured third place.

Other top performers were:

U21 Open: 1 Lucas Sipipa (Kandjimi Murangi), 2 Jason Shaningwa (Kandjimi Murangi), 3 Mathew Augustu (Himarwa Lithete).

U17 Open: 1 Leonard Hakusembe (Kandjimi Murangi), 2 Frans Petrus (Kandjimi Murangi), 3 Ndumba Kavandi (Kandjimi Murangi).

U15 Open: 1 Innocent Mushwena (Himarwa Lithete) (sole participant).

There were no entries in the girls’ sections.

Kavango West chess chairperson Petrus Kawende described the event as a positive starting point despite limited participation.

“The tournament was not a bad one since it is just the beginning and the players were happy,” he said.
