Bank Windhoek backs chess with N$550 000
Bank Windhoek recently announced another N$550 000 sponsorship to the Namibia Chess Federation (NCF) to strengthen youth development through chess, supporting education, strategic thinking and national representation.
The latest contribution lifts the bank’s support over the past four years to N$2 million. The funding will drive national programmes ranging from grassroots development and school outreach to participation in regional and international competitions.
NCF's newly elected president, Candidate Master (CM) Charles Eichab, welcomed the renewed backing, calling it a “game-changer” for the sport.
“Chess is more than a game. It builds critical thinking, discipline and confidence in our youth. This partnership strengthens our ability to deliver on that mission,” he said, adding that the bank has been one of the federation’s most consistent supporters.
CM Eichab said sponsorships such as these allow the federation to select and prepare a competitive national team for major international tournaments, including the upcoming 46th Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan this September.
The Olympiad, organised by the International Chess Federation (Fide), is the world’s premier biennial team event and is expected to draw participants from about 200 countries.
Bank Windhoek’s head of strategic partnerships and corporate social responsibility, Bronwyn Moody, said the sponsorship reflects their long-term investment in skills that translate beyond the board.
“We believe in initiatives that create lasting value for our communities. Chess aligns with our focus on education, strategic thinking and youth development. We are proud to partner with the chess federation in shaping future leaders who will contribute meaningfully to the country’s growth,” she said.
