'Peri-Peri' looks ahead to 2026
Namibian boxer Sem "Peri-Peri" Matheus has his sights set on improved performances this year after a scheduled fight in December last year failed to go ahead.
The boxer, who previously fought under the MTC Nestor “Sunshine” Boxing and Fitness Academy, joined Golden Boxing Academy last year, where he aims to expand his horizons.
“My target this year is to win titles in the featherweight division or even move into the super-featherweight category.
“I have been preparing well for fights and I must say anyone can come and fight me this year at their own peril.
“I am daring boxers from Africa, Europe, Asia and America to try me this time around,” said Matheus.
December disappointment
The boxer was set to face South Africa’s Azinga Fuzile in East London last year but was unable to do so due to several complications ahead of the bout.
Matheus’s trip was not sanctioned at the time, which led to the cancellation of the fight.
“That is all behind me now, and all I can do is look forward to the future because I trust there is more to my career than a fight that did not take place.
“As a boxer, I have gone through some disappointing moments, but that has not taken my passion away.
“I remain committed to making my career great and nothing will stop me until I have achieved that.”
The 32-year-old made his professional debut in March 2018 and was highly regarded as a talented prospect at the time.
The Namibian boxer has recorded eight wins from 15 professional fights so far.
He has secured three knockout victories and has lost four of his professional bouts.
Matheus has also registered three draws in his professional boxing career.
“I am at an age where all my next fights have to turn out well in order for me to achieve my goals.
“Like I said, I have been through ups and downs, but I remain determined to reach the peak of my career.”
The boxer could not reveal when his next fight will be, but he is hopeful his promoter will secure him a bout to kick-start the year in style.
