Nangolo to fight in May
The AC Boxing Promotions has announced that one of their stable's stars, Flame “Special One” Nangolo, will be in action in May.
The Namibian fighter is set to defend his World Boxing Organisation (WBO) African super-featherweight title against Zimbabwe’s Tinashe “‘Chairman” Mwadziwana.
The fight event, titled “MAYDAY”, will take place on 2 May at the Roman Catholic Hall in Windhoek’s city centre.
Promoter Imms Moses says the fight will mark as an important step in Nangolo’s boxing career.
“It is a very important fight for Nangolo, because he has found it difficult to get opponents for his title defence.
“However, we strongly believe that inactivity is not an option and we deemed it important for the fighter to remain active.
“Flame is always very active in the gym and I have no doubt about his ability to perform well in his next fight,” Moses told Sport Wrap.
The promotions spoke on the importance of regular fights, especially for those boxers aiming to improve their rankings.
“The WBO requires active participation to maintain or improve your world ranking, and AC Promotions is fully committed to ensuring that Special One continues climbing the ladder.
“Our target is clear – we want him to break into the top 10 of the WBO world rankings.
“Special One continues to represent Namibia with pride, discipline and ambition, and this fight is another major move toward global title contention.”
Working hard
Nangolo has recently broken into the WBO’s top 15 rankings for the first time, a significant milestone that places him firmly on the pathway towards a future world title opportunity.
The Namibian has a record of 15 wins out of 15 fights, with five of the victories coming by knockout.
He most recently fought last September when he defeated Steven Bagwasi of Botswana by a wide unanimous decision. It was Nangolo's first defence of the WBO Africa title he had taken from Felix Ajom of Ghana five months before.
Nangolo told Sport Wrap he has been working hard in the gym and is looking forward to the fight.
“I have been preparing myself well and will be anticipating the fight in May, given that I am really looking forward to it. I am grateful to my promoter for organising this fight, because it’s been a while since I have been in action.
“I would like to invite the fans to come in numbers and watch me win this fight in style,” Nangolo said.
The opponent
Nangolo will be up against an experienced campaigner who has already fought 35 times in his professional career compared to the 24-year-old Namibian’s 15 fights.
Mwadziwana has 20 wins of which 13 have been by knockout. The 37-year old Harare-born fighter has lost 14 of his professional bouts, with three of them by knockout.
His last fight resulted in a third-round knockout win against Laston Kaira of Malawi on 1 November last year in Chivu, Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwean’s professional career started in December 2006.
Nangolo on the other hand only had his first fight in December 2019, indicating the marked difference in experience between the two fighters, neither of whom has much of an amateur background to speak of.
Mwadziwana has previously held the Zimbabwean super bantamweight national title belt, as well as the WBF African super featherweight belt in 2023.
However, he has been on a long losing streak taking on Namibian fighters on their home soil since the days of Joseph Hilongwa (three times by unanimous decision in 2010, 2011 and 2016), Imms Naidjala (UD four rounds in 2010), Abmerk Shindjuu (unanimous decision after six rounds in 2011), Joseph Katenda (twice in 2012), Nathanael Kakololo (round 8 KO in 2021) and Mateus Heita (retired after round 5, in 2021).
Undercard line-up
Moses has lined-up several other boxers to be in action in supporting bouts before the main fight.
Lightweight boxers Hafeni Ngesheya and Ruan Rispel will also represent the stable, as well as junior welterweight Robert Ndalelwa.
The opponents for these fighters will be revealed in due course.
“AC Promotions remains committed to matching these fighters with competitive local boxers to create opportunities and develop Namibian talent.”
Call for support
The boxing promoter has once again requested for assistance in order for him to host a successful boxing event.
“Hosting a championship event of this magnitude is a significant undertaking. AC Promotions calls upon government institutions and the corporate sector to come on board and support this initiative.
“This event is more than a fight night – it is an investment in youth development, national pride, and the future of Namibian boxing.
“Fans can expect an action-packed night filled with elite boxing and an unforgettable atmosphere.”
Appreciation
The stable has extended its gratitude towards the David Namwandi Trust for coming on board in support of the event.
Moses is looking forward to welcoming additional sponsors willing to partner with the stable.
General tickets will be selling for N$300, while a VIP table for ten is worth N$20 000.
"We are inviting boxing fans to come in their numbers and support this important fight,” Moses said.
