MTC Sunshine boxers ready to rumble
Windhoek is set for a night of high-stakes boxing and national pride as the MTC Nestor Sunshine Boxing Academy stages the “Tribute to His Excellency Dr. Sam Shafishuna Nujoma Boxing Bonanza” on 9 May 2026 at the Windhoek Showgrounds.
Held in partnership with the Sam Nujoma Foundation, the event pays homage to Sam Shafishuna Nujoma, whose influence extended beyond politics into the growth of sport in Namibia, particularly boxing, where he served as patron and advocate for youth development.
“This will be a big fight night and I can assure you that the boxers are ready.
“We are inviting people to come in numbers and support this special occasion.
“The boxers have done some good preparations and I am sure that this will be an entertaining night,” Tobias said.
All eyes will be on Fillipus Nghitumbwa, who headlines the card with a defense of his WBO Global title against Colombia’s hard-hitting Leonardo Carrillo, the reigning WBA Latino champion. The bout presents a defining moment for Nghitumbwa, who is looking to solidify his standing on the world stage against a dangerous and experienced opponent.
In the co-main event, Mateus Heita puts his WBO Africa title on the line against South Africa’s Zolisa Mbattyi in what promises to be a fiercely contested regional clash with continental bragging rights at stake.
The undercard continues the theme of rising talent and future ambition. Harry Simon Jr, son of a Namibian boxing legend, steps into the ring against Freeman Mbadweke as he looks to carve out his own legacy. Meanwhile, Joy Nangoloand Naftalie Shooyapo are also set to feature, adding depth and excitement to a stacked fight card.
Beyond the ropes, the event underscores boxing’s broader impact in Namibia.
“From gyms and medical teams to hospitality and media, fight night fuels multiple sectors of the economy while offering young athletes a pathway out of hardship and into professional sport,” Tobias said.
Organizers say the bonanza is more than a one-night spectacle but it is the foundation of an annual tradition aimed at honoring legacy while building future champions.
With international attention expected and careers on the line, the Windhoek Showgrounds could once again prove to be the launching pad for Namibia’s next global boxing stars.
“Tickets for the event are priced at N$100 for general admission, while VIP tables accommodating ten guests are available for N$20,000, offering an exclusive ringside experience.”
