Triple triumph for Musekiwa at Khomas Champs
Ongwediva Run Along Multidisciplinary Sport’s Tapiwa Musekiwa got a clean sweep of the throwing events at the Khomas Regional Athletics Championships held on Saturday at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium.
Hosted in collaboration with University of Namibia (Unam) Athletics, the event set the stage for the year as it was the first on the region’s athletics calendar to kickstart the season.
Musekiwa’s treble came in the men’s section, tallying a distance of 10.10m in shot put, 25.80m in discus and 38.53m in javelin. His only competition was Gift Rusaere, who settled for second place after recording 9.37m, 24.58m and 30.52m, respectively.
Reflecting on the victories, the Ongwediva Run Along athlete was all smiles, describing it as an exciting feeling.
“I still have to perfect a few things, especially in discus, to be ready and do better in my upcoming competitions,” he told Sport Wrap.
Up next on the Khomas athletics calendar are the Top 10 Club Championships scheduled for 7 February.
Musekiwa is, however, mostly looking forward to the Athletics Namibia Senior National Championships scheduled for 26 April in Windhoek.
“I feel I could do better at the nationals this time around, [unlike last season when I placed fifth]. I spent countless hours in the gym and on the field, perfecting my techniques during the off-season. I am targeting that podium position this year,” he said.
He further urged fellow athletes to use the off-season as a time of preparation for the following season.
The women’s throwing event only featured discus, which was won by Elizabeth van Rensburg (38.67m) ahead of her only rival, Karlien Botha (34.35m).
