Zarita, Weakley win Berg-Op Academy Shoot

The country’s reigning golden boy, Burton Weakley of Windhoek High School (WHS), and Pro-Ed Academy’s Zarita du Plessis were recently crowned senior section champions of the Berg-Op Academy Archery Shoot.African Genesis Archery (AGA) Namibia’s recent event attracted over 140 archers to Okahandja, competing in the senior, junior and adult sections across 16 clubs nationwide.
Senior winners
Archers put their marksmanship to the test, competing for prizes and points towards their national ranking in the Bullseye and Animal Target rounds, with a combined maximum score of 1200.
The senior girls’ section was a family affair, with the Du Plessis sisters Zarita and Zelandra dominating the top two spots, with only two points separating them on 1114 and 1112, respectively. Their only competition was hosting school’s Kayla von Wielligh, who finished 14 points below in third place with 1098.
Weakley dominated the senior boys’ section with a strong 15-point margin (1171), clear of runner-up Fedaliz Basson of Community Hope School (1156). Duan Kruger of Roots Gymnasium rounded out the podium with 1148 in third place.
Junior winners
The junior section was equally competitive, with the girls’ section dominated by Jeandrie van der Merwe of Windhoek Afrikaans Private School (WAP), who tallied an outstanding 24-point margin.
Van der Merwe topped the section with 1074, ahead of Mieke Landsberg of Moria in second place with 1050, also setting a new Animal Target record of 269. Community Hope School’s Unondiero Tjijenda secured third place with 1034.
The boys’ section saw the largest margin of the entire shoot, with Willem van der Merwe (WAP) scoring 1169 in first place, just two points behind senior boys’ winner Burton Weakley. The junior runner-up was Luka Jansen van Vuuren, who scored 1139, finishing ahead of third-placed Adrian Compaan (1126) from Moria.
Cub winners
Girls: 1 Jonel-Maris Robberts (Moria), 2 Jhaviah Maduwerachilage (St George’s - new Bullseye record of 119), 3 Olivia Sakeus (Windhoek Christian Academy).
Boys: 1 Karl Compaan (Moria), 2 Xander Pearson (WAP), 3 Joshua van Rooyen (Moria).
Adult Archery Group (AAG)
Women: 1 Alyssa van Zijl, 2 Marionette de Waal, 3 Charne Coetzee.
Men: 1 Berend Blom, 2 Delron Gaoseb, 3 Johann de Beer.
‘Unforgettable memories’
Event organiser Christel du Plessis credited the event’s success to what she described as an incredible team of six parents who carried the weight of organisation.
“Their tireless efforts made the day possible. My heart is full, even if my body is tired. This year’s Berg-Op Shoot has once again proved that teamwork, passion and commitment turn challenges into unforgettable memories,” she said.
